Geography
Macau is located in the southern China coast, and is the islands of Coloane and Taipla in South China Sea. Macau’s area is about 28.2 sq km and is connected to Taipe by three bridges.
History
Macau became the very first European settlement after the arrival of Portuguese in the China at early period of 16th century. Portuguese governed the area and turn it into a major trading post. Although the area was governed by Portuguese, Chinese still owned the area. Macau becomes a central point throughout the 2nd world after Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese in 1943. Japanese continued their reign until August 1945. Macau was reclaimed by the China until 20th December, 1999.
Economy
The two greatest industries in Macau are gaming and tourism. Macau, the only officially authorized gambling area all over the China, has fascinated the foreign investments of about 10 billions dollars since 2001. Gaming industry in Macau accounts around 75% of total government revenue and the revenue generated in Macau in 2006 was more than that of Las Vegas.
The Casinos
The very first American casino that was build and opened in Macau is the Sands Macao. This casino hits rank of the world’s largest casino and it cost nearly $240 million to complete the building process of this casino and the area of this casino covers about 229,000 sq feet. Venetian Macao, Asia’s largest hotel and World’s 3rd largest building, that was build by Las Vegas Sands Corporation cost about $2.4 billion. In August 2007, the casino was first opened and comprises the world’s largest casino space of about 550,000 sq feet. Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s CEO, Sheldon Adelson plans investing nearly $12 billion by the year 2010 towards commencement of more hotels such as The Sheraton and The Four Seasons. There are more than 38 casinos in the Macau Peninsula.
